Have you ever visited the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro? In today's post you will learn some fun facts about this famous Brazilian tourist destination and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. 

 

- The sculpture of Jesus Christ with open arms is called 'Cristo Redentor' (Christ the Redeemer) in Portuguese.

 

- The statue is located at the top of Morro do Corcovado, a 710 meters tall mountain located in the Tijuca National Park in Rio de Janeiro.

 

- The monument opened in 1931 is one of the most visited tourist spots in Rio de Janeiro, also known as Cidade Maravilhosa (Marvelous City).

 

- It is the largest Art Deco sculpture in the world. It is 38 meters tall.

 

- The structure was built using reinforced concrete covered with soapstone.

 

- Arriving at the foot of the statue, it used to be necessary to climb a ladder with more than 200 steps. Nowadays, there are elevators and escalators to facilitate access for tourists.

 

- Visitors enjoy a panoramic view, overlooking famous locations in the city such as the Maracanã stadium, the Sugarloaf Mountain and the beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana.



 

- There are several replicas inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue spread throughout Brazil’s other states, and even in other countries like Cristo Rey in Cali, Colombia; Cristo de la Concordia in Cochabamba, Bolivia and Christ King in Świebodzin, Poland.
