How To Form Wh- Questions In English

Wh- questions begin with a question word. We put the auxiliary verb before the subject. The answer to the question is information. The answer is never a yes or no. Below are some question words:


 

✅ Who (people)

Ex: Who is that woman?

It’s Jen. 

 

✅ Whose (possession)

Ex: Whose is that hat?

It’s Bob’s. 

 

✅ What (things)

Ex: What is that?

It’s an essay.

 

✅ Which (things)

Ex: Which phone is yours?

The red one.

 

✅ Where (places)

Ex: Where is my computer?

It’s on your desk.

 

✅ When (time)

Ex: When are you going on vacation?

Next week.

 

✅ How long (time)

Ex: How long have you known each other?

For ten years. 

 

✅ How long ago (time)

Ex: How long ago did you graduate?

Five years ago.

 

✅ How often (time)

Ex: How often do you see a movie?

Usually once a week.

 

✅ How much (quantity/number)

Ex: How much is it?

It’s $25.

 

✅ How many (quantity/number)

Ex: How many bananas did you buy?

12.

 

✅ How (manner)

Ex: How are you?

 I’m well, thanks.

 

✅ Why (reason)

Ex: Why are you so happy?

Because I just got a new job!

 

✅ How old (age)

Ex: How old is your sister?

She’s 24.
