How to Form Plurals in English

Do you find forming plurals in English difficult? Then this lesson is perfect for you!


 

Do we add -ies, -es or -s ?

 

✅  Add -s (general use)

Book - Books

Car - Cars


 

✅  Add -ies (Consonant + Y)

Party - Parties

Baby - Babies


 

✅  Add -s (Vowel + Y)

Boy - Boys

Way - Ways


 

✅  Add -es (-s, -ss, -ch, -sh, -x, -o)

Bus - Buses Dress - Dresses Peach - Peaches Ash - Ashes Box - Boxes Tomato- Tomatoes


 

✅  Add -ves (-f , -fe)

Leaf - Leaves 

Knife - Knives

Wolf - Wolves


 

✅  Some nouns end in -f but they don’t change to -ves:

Chief - Chiefs

Roof - Roofs


 

✅  Some nouns end in -o but they don’t change to -es:

Piano - Pianos

Video - Videos


 

✅  Irregular Plural Nouns

 

Child - Children

Fish -Fish

Foot - Feet

Tooth - Teeth

Man - Men

Person - People

Mouse - Mice

Sheep - Sheep

Woman - Women

Series - Series


 

Note: ‘Series’ is an irregular plural - 'series' is used both in the singular and in the plural.
