Aug 24, 2021 / English / 1 mins read

The Leaning Tower of Pisa or the 'Torre pendente di Pisa', as it is called in Italian, has a unique characteristic that made it famous worldwide: its lean. Do you know how this happened?

In today's post you will learn some curious facts about this famous Italian tourist destination:

- Construction of the tower started in 1173 but the work suffered some interruptions due to military conflicts and problems with the structure of the tower.

- The tower started to tilt when the building reached the third floor due to the soft soil that could not hold the structure. Over the years, engineers have worked to correct the problem so that the tower does not fall.

- The inclination of the tower reached 5.5 degrees and nowadays after repairs it is tilted by about 4 degrees.

- The tower is about 57 meters high, has 8 floors and 7 bells.

- The construction was completed in the mid-1300s.

- The tower is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
