How To Answer Questions Like A Native English Speaker
How To Answer Questions Like A Native English Speaker
Dec 31, 2020 / English / 2 mins read

When someone asks you a question including the verbs: 'to think', 'to suppose' or 'to expect': do not answer ‘I think yes’ or ‘I think no’, this is incorrect. To answer like a native speaker, say “I think so”.

After some verbs we use "so" when we don’t want to repeat something. Below are some examples as well as their negative forms:

➡ “Are those people British?”

Affirmative form: “I think so.” = I think they are British.

Negative form: “I don’t think so.”

➡ “Can you watch my dog this weekend?”

Affirmative form: “I suppose so.” = I suppose I can watch your dog.

Negative form: “I don’t suppose so.” or “I suppose not.”

➡ “Will you be home for dinner tonight?”

Affirmative form: “I expect so.” = I expect I’ll be home for dinner

Negative form: “I don’t expect so.”

Let’s practice:

Write affirmative and interrogative answers to the questions below using "so":

1) “Will Jake be on time tomorrow?”

Affirmative form: ____________________________.

Negative form: ____________________________.

2) “Will it be cold tomorrow?”

Affirmative form: ____________________________.

Negative form: ____________________________.

3) “Is it okay if I’m late for work tomorrow?”

Affirmative form: ____________________________.

Negative form: ____________________________.
