Have you ever been to Greece? In today’s post we will share some fun facts about Ancient Greece:

 

- In 800 BC, the Greeks started to establish city-states - each with its own culture and laws.

 

- The Greek Olympic Games originated in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece. City-state representatives met and competed with each other in events such as running, long jump, wrestling and boxing. The winners were given a crown of leaves.

 

- The Greeks are believed to have invented theater. The actors wore masks with a happy/sad expression to indicate to the audience the character's state of mind.

 

- Greek Mythology (as the set of myth narratives is called) includes many interesting stories like that of the Minotaur, a creature with the head of a bull and the body of a man who lived in a maze. Or Medusa, a witch who had the power to transform people into stone with her gaze.

 

- The ancient Greeks celebrated several gods.

They held festivals in honor of them and sculpted statues of them. Among these gods were: Aphrodite, goddess of love, beauty and sexuality; Athena, goddess of wisdom, reason and war; Artemis, goddess of the hunt and Apollo, god of light.

 

- The Parthenon temple in Athens was built in honor of the goddess Athena, protector of the city.
