English Mistakes To Avoid: Learn To Pronounce “Rate” And “Hate”

Mispronouncing words is very common for language learners. This specific error is especially common for native Brazilian Portuguese speakers.

In Portuguese, words starting with the letter “r” are pronounced similar to the sound of h in the verb ‘have’.

Therefore, pronouncing the word rate incorrectly results in “hate”.

This can cause awkward situations!

✅ To rate (rāt) means to evaluate something, while to hate (hāt) is a strong aversion to something.
