2021년 11월 3일 / 영어 / 3 분 읽기

Have you ever been to Paris? Learn some fun facts about this beautiful city in today’s lesson:

- The Eiffel Tower, the stunning French icon, was named in honor of the engineer and architect Gustave Eiffel, a specialist in metal construction whose company was responsible for building the tower. It was built for the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris. Eiffel also contributed to the Statue of Liberty. The statue was originally erected at the Eiffel works in Paris before being dismantled and shipped to the United States.

- Paris is dazzling by day and by night with its thousands of street lamps. It is believed that the nickname 'City of Light' is due to the number of artists, writers and intellectuals who have passed through the city.

In the film Midnight in Paris directed by Woody Allen, an American writer is transported to 1920s Paris and meets several intellectuals of the time such as Gertrude Stein, Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, F. Scott Fitzgerald.

- Although “Pont Neuf” means “New Bridge”, this bridge is actually the oldest bridge built over the River Seine. It connects Île de la Cité to Rive Gauche (left bank) and Rive Droite (right bank). The charming medieval bridge offers a beautiful view of the Seine and the city.

- Paris is considered the birthplace of big fashion with brands like Dior, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel originating there.
