Like all languages, English has adopted many words from other languages that it came into

contact with throughout history. 

Learn these English words borrowed from Dutch and Flemish language:

 


 

✅ booze = alcohol, especially hard liquor

 

✅ buoy = an anchored float serving as a navigation mark 

 

✅ cookie = a small sweet cake 

 

✅ dock = a structure extending out from the shore into a body of water

 

✅ dollar = a basic monetary unit

 

✅ easel = a self-supporting wooden frame for holding art while it’s being made

 

✅ freight = goods transported by truck, train, ship, or aircraft

 

✅ gin = a clear alcoholic spirit

 

✅ landscape = all the visible features of an area of countryside or land

 

✅ leak = an accidental hole or crack in a container that releases contents

 

✅ scoop = to pick up in a swift, fluid movement

 

✅ sketch = a rough or unfinished drawing

 

✅ smuggle = moving goods or people illegally into or out of a country

 

✅ stripe = a long narrow band or strip 

 

✅ waffle = a small crisp batter cake

 

✅ yacht  = a medium-sized sailboat
