A phrasal verb is a verb + one or more prepositions or an adverb that results in a

different meaning from the meaning of the original root verb.

Phrasal verbs are incredibly common in English and are very useful in both written and oral

communication. Because of this, we need to understand how to use phrasal verbs in order to

understand and speak natural English in a fluent and comfortable way. Phrasal verbs can be

quite challenging because there are many phrasal verbs that look very similar to the root verb

alone, but have completely different and often unpredictable meanings.

 

Are phrasal verbs challenging for you?

The following are some common phrasal verbs with the root verb put:


 

✅ Put on can be used in various situations:

 

- When people organize or produce an exhibition.

Ex: The students are putting on a theatre play.

 

- Behave in an unnatural way, pretend.

He frustrated me when he put on an act for my parents

 

- To dress oneself or apply make-up.

Ex: I think you should put on a coat because it's cold.

 

- To bet on something using money.

I put 10 dollars on my baseball team.

 

- To gain weight

Ex: I ate a lot on the weekend and I think I put on weight.

 

- To cook food or heat it.

Ex: Now you need to put the carrots on.


 

- If you put a record or song on, you play it.

She drew a bath, and put her favorite song on. 


 

✅ Put off: To delay or to postpone some activity.

Ex: I put off going to the doctor.


 

✅ Put something away: ​to put something in the place where it is kept because you have finished using it.

I'm just going to put the game away (= in the box). 


 

✅ Put at

Refers to the estimated value of something.

The renovation of the house is put at around ten thousand dollars.


 

✅ Put into

To spend time or money doing some activity.

Ex: I put so much time into making this food.
