Do you feel confused when using prepositions of time in English? Learn in today's lesson how to use them once and for all.

 

➡ IN

Use:

- Months/Seasons/Year

- Time of Day

- After a period of time

 

Examples:

- I was born in 1985.

- I have breakfast in the morning.

- We will leave in two hours.


 

➡ ON

Use:

- Days of the week

- Weekend

 

Examples:

- We have class on Monday.

- We have fun on the weekends.


 

➡ AT

Use:

- Night

- A point in time

 

Examples:

- I sleep at night.

- I wake up at 7am.


 

➡ SINCE

Use:

- From a point of time

 

Example:

- I have been here since 3pm.


 

➡ FOR

Use:

- A period of time

 

Example:

- I lived there for 2 years.


 

➡ AGO

Use:

- A time in the past

 

Example:

- I moved here 4 months ago.


 

➡ BEFORE

Use:

- Earlier than a certain time

 

Example:

- I was born before 2011.


 

➡ TO

Use:

- Tell the time

 

Example:

- It is quarter to five.


 

➡ PAST

Use:

- Tell the time

 

Example:

- It is a quarter past five.


 

➡ FROM/TO

Use:

- Mark the beginning and end of a period of time

 

Example:

- I work from 9 to 5.


 

➡ UNTIL

Use:

- Mark how long something will last 

 

Example:

- I will be traveling until Sunday.


 

➡ BY

Use:

- Sense of at the latest

- Up to a certain time.

 

Example:

- I will be back by 7 o’clock.

- By 9 o’clock, I had finished all my work.
