Casa (sustantivo): edificio de una o pocas plantas destinado a vivienda familiar, en oposición a piso. Edificio para habitar. O, una construcción peculiar con una historia interesante, que llama la atención de quienes pasan por allá.
La última definición parece ser el caso en algunas ciudades argentinas. El país suramericano ofrece muchas opciones de diversión: degustar vinos en Mendoza, practicar esquí en Bariloche, asistir a presentaciones de tango (¿y por qué no intentar bailar?) en Buenos Aires. Pero si ya has hecho todo esto, o si tan solo quieres divisar algo distinto, aquí están algunas alternativas.

Ahora, vamos a las más ilustres casas insólitas en Argentina. El Caminito, con sus casitas coloridas muy simples, es algo que no se puede perder en la capital. No solo para apreciar la vista coloreada, pero también por las cafeterías, los restaurantes y las tiendas donde pasar un rato.
La razón porque todas las casas son tan coloridas es sobretodo financiero. Entre 1880 y 1930 aquel barrio (La Boca) agasajó muchos inmigrantes italianos que venían para trabajar en el puerto. Ellos empezaron a construir sus viviendas allá, de la manera más sencilla y barata posible para aquella época. Además, utilizaban sobras de tinta usada para pintar los barcos, ya que otros tipos de pintura no estaban disponibles tampoco eran asequibles.

Salta es una provincia al norte del país, dominada por el paisaje desértico. Vale la pena ir a una localidad llamada Cafayate, que ofrece varios museos y una encantadora plaza central con una catedral. Cerca del Museo de la Vida y del Vino, vos encontrarás esta casa curiosa:
Fue hecha por un artesano local dedicado a las cerámicas, que quiso valorar la fauna nativa. Los animales retratados son una llama y un ñandú, comúnmente encontrados en aquella región.

Esta encantadora ciudad está ubicada cerca de Buenos Aires y uno puede llegar allá en tren o en buque. A propósito, los tours en barco son bien populares allí. Las embarcaciones navegan por unos sitios muy copados, como clubes de fin de semana, un parque de diversiones y un casino. Aunque no te apetezcan tanto estas atracciones, una cosa te va a llamar la atención: una fascinante casa dentro de una redoma de vidrio.
Ella pertenecía a Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, expresidente de Argentina. Un lugar salvaje en el pasado, la región se ha transformado, por la iniciativa de Sarmiento, en un sitio de veraneo para las familias argentinas más ricas. La mayoría de las casas era hecha de madera, ya que él fue un entusiasta de este material para construir.
Tras su muerte en 1895, la casa fue declarada Monumento Histórico Nacional. Hoy en día atrae turistas como museo y biblioteca. Como podría ser fácilmente deteriorada por la acción del clima, una curiosa caja de cristal fue puesta sobre ella.

¡Es hora de llegar al centro financiero y turístico del país! Buenos Aires tiene una atmósfera agitada y es llena de opciones de establecimientos para comer, bailar, ver a una obra de teatro o a un partido de fútbol, o solamente relajar en un parque interesante. Y la buena noticia es que ni siquiera hay que cambiar tu agenda para divisar esta casa raramente emplazada:
Cuando estés en la famosa y anchísima Avenida 9 de Julio, bien en frente al Obelisco, mirá arriba y alrededor. Vos vas a encontrar una casa ubicada en la cima de un edificio. Fue idealizada por Don Rafael Díaz, un empresario del sector de muebles que comenzó su compañía en la edificación. Ya que vivía demasiado lejos de su trabajo en aquella época, él decidió construir un chalet luego en su cima, para que se quedara más fácil de trabajar y relajar, sin tener que encarar largas horas en el tráfico. Después de su muerte, en los 60, su negocio no sobrevivió y en el edificio ahora funcionan oficinas. La casa persiste deshabitada.

House (noun): a building for human habitation, especially one that consists of a ground floor and one or more upper stories. Shelter or building designed to be used as a residence. Or, an offbeat construction with an interesting story, that calls the attention of people who walk by it.
The last definition seems to be the case in some cities in Argentina. The South American country brings a lot of options for amusement: wine-tasting in Mendoza, ski stations in Bariloche, watching tango presentations (and why not dancing it?) in Buenos Aires. But if you have already tried all of that, or if you’re just eager to see something different, here are some options.

Now, we’re turning to the probably most illustrious eccentric houses in Argentina. El Caminito, (little path, in English) with its simple colorful buildings, it’s a must-see in the capital. Not only can one appreciate the flashy view, but also there are a lot of cafes, restaurants and shops to spend some time at.
The reason why all livings are so multicolored is financial. Between 1880 and 1930 that area (La Boca) became home for Italian immigrants who would work at the port. They started making their livings there, in the simplest and cheapest way possible at that time. Moreover, they’d use leftover paints from the shipyard, as other types of covering weren’t neither available nor affordable.

Salta
Salta is a province in the North of the country, dominated by a desert landscape. Make your way to a town called Cafayate, which offers several museums and a lovely main square with a cathedral. Near the Museo de la Vida y del Vino, you will come across this curious house:
Made by a local artisan focused on pottery, it values the native fauna: the animals pictured in it are a llama and a rhea, commonly found around that area.

Tigre
This charming small town which name means “tiger” is near Buenos Aires and can be reached by train or by boat. By the way, boat tours are very popular there. They sail along some cool places like weekend clubs, an amusement park and a casino. Even if you’re not into these sort of attractions, something will still catch your eye. A delightful wooden house inside of a glass dome:
It belonged to Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, former president of Argentina. Once a wild area, it became, under the initiative of Sarmiento, a weekend site for wealthy Argentinian families. Most of the houses were made of wood, as he was an enthusiast of this material for construction.
After his death in 1895, the house was declared a National Historic Monument. Nowadays, it attracts tourists as a museum and library. Since it could be easily deteriorated by the action of climate, a curious glass box was set over it.

It’s time to get to the financial and tourist center of the country! Buenos Aires has a busy atmosphere, being full of options of places for eating, dancing, watching theater plays or football matches or just chilling out on a nice park. And the good news is that you don’t need to change anything in your schedule to see this odd-placed house:
When you are in the infamous and gigantic Avenida 9 de Julio, right in front of the Obelisk, just look up and around. You’ll be able to spot a house located on the top of a building. It was idealized by Don Rafael Díaz, a furniture-business owner who started up his company on the building. Since he lived too far away from his job at that time, he decided to build his house on the top of it, making it easier to work and relax, without having to face long hours in traffic. After he died, in the 1960’s, his business didn’t quite survive and the building is now an office. The house remains uninhabited.
