Confusing Words: Photograph & Photography

In English, there are many words that look similar but have different pronunciation and meanings. These words can be particularly confusing for English learners. In the case of 'photograph' and 'photography', we have two words that look very similar but have different meanings and pronunciation. 

 

✅ Photograph (countable)

An image captured by a camera, synonym of photo and picture.

 

Examples:

- My grandmother has a lot of black-and-white photographs.

- This is one of the photographs I took on our trip.

 

When we pronounce ‘photograph’, the stressed syllable is the first (photograph).


 

✅ Photography (uncountable)

The artistic process of taking photographs.

 

Examples:

- I am taking photography classes.

- Photography is a hobby of mine.

- The director of photography did a great job! 

 

When we pronounce ‘photography’, the stressed syllable is the second (photography).

 

 

➡ By the way, a photographer is someone who takes pictures.
