Today we are going to learn how to talk about a very relaxing activity: sleep! In this lesson you will see that there are many words related to this activity. Do you know, for example, how to say that you woke up late for work? Learn below!


 

✅ Sleep in (phrasal verb)

When you sleep until later than you usually do.

Ex: I slept in today because I took the day off.


 

✅ Sleep (verb)

The state of rest with the mind unconscious and eyes closed.

Ex: I am tired! I need to go home to sleep.


 

✅ Asleep (adjective)

When someone is sleeping.

Ex: I was exhausted and fell asleep during the movie.


 

✅ Sleep over (phrasal verb)

To sleep at somebody else’s home.

Ex: My nephew will sleep over at my house on Friday.


 

✅ Sleep through (phrasal verb)

When you are asleep and don't wake from noise or other disturbances.

Ex: She was tired and slept through the documentary.


 

✅ Stay up (phrasal verb)

When you go to bed later than you are used to.

Ex: She stayed up yesterday to watch the movie.


 

✅ Wake up (phrasal verb)

To stop sleeping.

Ex: She wakes up at 7 am. 


 

✅ Awake (adjective)

When somebody is not sleeping - the opposite of asleep.

Ex: I was very awake after drinking my coffee.


 

✅ Get up (phrasal verb)

To get out of bed.

Ex: I should go to bed now. I have to get up at 5am.


 

✅ Doze off (phrasal verb)

To start sleeping during the day when you are not intending to.

Ex: I had to get up very early today and almost dozed off at work.


 

✅ Nap (noun)

A short sleep during the day.

Ex: I'm used to taking a nap during my lunch hour.


 

✅ Yawn (verb)

When you open your mouth very wide, taking in a lot of air because you are tired or bored.

Ex: I have yawned about ten times this afternoon. I'm really sleepy!
