‘But’ vs. ‘Although’ - Learn The Difference

We use “but” and “although” to express contrast.

 

➡ “But” goes in the middle of the sentence.

➡ “Although” can go at the beginning or in the middle of the sentence.

 

Examples:

- Today is a public holiday, but I am going to work.

- Although today is a public holiday, I am going to work.

- I am going to work, although today is a public holiday.

- I have a fever, but I am going to work.

- Although I have a fever, I am going to work.

- I am going to work, although I have a fever. 


 

Let’s practice!

 

Fill in the blanks with ‘but’ or ‘although’:

 

1) She asked him to wash the dishes, ___________ he is sleeping.

 

2) ___________ she asked him to wash the dishes, he is sleeping.

 

3) He is sleeping, ___________ she asked him to wash the dishes.
