False Friends: "Assist" vs "Attend"
20 Apr 2021 / Inggris / 2 menit dibaca

The verb “to assist” can be confusing for speakers of Spanish because the verb “asistir” is a false friend (false cognate).

✅ Asistir (Spanish) means “to attend” in English.

Ex: I will attend a costume party this Saturday.

✅ “To assist” means to help someone.

Ex: They assisted her with the lesson.

➡ A curious fact is that ‘to assist’ can also confuse Portuguese speakers, but for a different reason. The verb assistir in Portuguese can have the same meaning as the English verbs ‘assist’, ‘attend’ or ‘watch’, depending on the context.
