So vs. Because - How To Use These Words

Have you ever felt confused about when to use the words "so" and "because"? We have prepared this lesson to help you understand how to use them.

 

✔ We use “so” with results.

“So” goes in the middle of the sentence.

It was raining, so I bought an umbrella.

 

✔ We use “because” with reasons.

“Because” can go at the beginning or in the middle of the sentence.

I bought an umbrella, because it was raining. Because it was raining, I bought an umbrella.

 

Other examples:

- Mosquitoes were coming into my room, so I closed the window.

- I closed the window, because mosquitoes were coming into my room.

- Because mosquitoes were coming into my room, I closed the window.

- I had a fever, so I stayed home all day.

- I stayed home all day, because I had a fever.

- Because I had a fever, I stayed home all day.
