Lend Or Borrow? Tips For Confusing Verbs

Learn in today's lesson the definitions of these verbs that often confuse English learners:

 

✅ Spend

To pay, pass, or use.

Ex:

-  He doesn’t spend a lot of money on clothes.

- I enjoy spending time with my family

 

✅ Waste

To use badly or ineffectively.

Ex:

- Don’t waste your money on junk food.

- I should study, but I’m wasting time on the Internet.  

 

✅ Lend:

To give something to someone for a defined period.

Ex:

- I am going to lend you this book. Please don’t lose it!

 

✅ Borrow:

To receive something from someone for a defined period.

 

Ex:

-  Listen, I can’t find my wallet and I’m going to miss my flight. There’s a taxi waiting downstairs. I need to borrow 50$. I promise to pay you back next week.



 

Let’s practice!

 

Select the correct verb:


 

1) I (lent / borrowed) Ralph 50$. He said he will pay me back tomorrow.

 

2) Excuse me, could I (lend / borrow) your pen for just one second?

 

3) Look at your hair! Do you not have a comb? I’m going to (lend / borrow) you mine. Just give it back before you leave.

 

4) “Smoking is really bad for you! You really must stop!”

 “I know, but I can’t help it. You are (spending / wasting) your breath.”

 

5) Your house is beautiful! If you don’t mind me asking, how much do you (spend / waste) on

 rent each month?

 

6) I was very happy to be able to (spend / waste) a lot of time with my family over the

 holidays.

 

7) Please stop (spending / wasting) time on that card game and get to work.
