Do you know when to use the verbs know and meet? They can be confusing for anyone learning English, so check out this lesson in which situation to use them:
✅ Know
A) be familiar with a person
Examples:
- Do you know Jerry?
- Of course we know him! He’s my sister’s best friend.
- He works as a party organizer, so he knows a lot of people.
B) understand facts
Examples:
- Do you know where Alabama is?
- I have no idea, but I know that it is in the South.
- In general, I don’t know a lot about geography.
✅ Meet
A) be introduced to a person for the first time
Examples:
- I first met Paul in 2001. We were introduced by a common friend.
- I want to meet my girlfriend’s parents, but she thinks it’s too soon.
B) to encounter a person or to have an appointment
Examples:
- We are going to meet at the Museum of Modern Art tomorrow afternoon.
- Let’s meet for coffee sometime.
