Do you know how to properly use the word ‘any’ in English sentences?

We have prepared this lesson for you to learn 5 ways to use it:


 

✅ Use 1: in sentences with a negative meaning.

Examples:

- We didn’t buy any snacks.

- Of course she’s free.

- She never does any work. He left the house without any money.


 

✅ Use 2: in most questions.

 

Examples:

- Do you have any money?

- You don’t want any coffee?

 

✅ Use 3: after if.

Examples:

- If there are any calls while I’m out, please forward them to my cell phone.

- If you have any questions, now is the time to ask them. 

 

✅ Use 4: sentences with the idea of if.

Examples:

- Any students who would like extra help need to see me today. = if any students would like extra help, they must see me today.

 

- I’m really sorry for any disruption I made. = if I have made a disruption, I’m really sorry.

 

✅ Use 5: sentences with the meaning it doesn’t really matter.

Examples:

- You can take any train from this station. They all go to your destination. = it doesn’t really matter which train you take. They all go to your destination.

 

- He left the door unlocked! Any stranger could have walked in. = it doesn’t really matter who could have walked in.
