‘Employee’ Or ‘Employer’? Learn To Talk About Your Job In English

Learn in today's lesson vocabulary about jobs and work to incorporate into your next English conversation.

 

➡ To ask about the occupation of someone, you can say:

- What do you do for a living?

- What is your occupation?

 

➡ Possible answers:

- I am a teacher.

- I took a job as a waitress.

- I work in a bakery.

- I work at Google.

- I work for Mrs. Jones.

- I work in sales.

- I’m unemployed.

 

Useful vocabulary:

 

➡ Employer = Someone who employs someone and pays for the work. It can be an organization or a person.

 

➡ Employee = Someone who is employed by an employer.

 

➡ Employed = When you have a job, you are employed (as a past participle of the verb to employ)

 

➡ Unemployed = When you don't have a job.

 

➡ Self-employed = When you are not an employee of a company, instead you work for yourself.

 

➡ Intern = Someone who is finishing training for a skilled job especially by getting practical experience of the work involved. 

 

➡ Résumé/CV = A document that briefly describes your personal information, education, skills and work experiences. 

 

➡ Apply for a job = To request for a job vacancy, generally by filling out a form.

 

➡ Workmate = Someone who works with you.

 

➡ Get hired = To get a job.

 

➡ Quit a job = To leave a job.

 

➡ Get fired = When an employer removes someone from an occupation.

 

➡ Job Interview = A meeting when the employer asks questions to decide to employ someone or not. 

 

➡ Salary = A payment to hired employees, generally monthly.

 

➡ Workaholic = Someone who works too much.
