Do you know when your friend tells you that he or she met someone new and you want to know about that person but don't know how to express it in English? This is frustrating, right? We prepared this lesson to help you with some questions and answers about describing people. 

✅ If someone wants to know more about another person they might ask questions such as:

“What is/are he/she/they like?”

“Is/Are he/she/they friendly?”

“Do you like him/her/them?”

✅ When we want to describe a person’s character, we can do so in two ways. We can either describe elements of their permanent character or we can refer to their current behaviour.

✅ To describe a person’s permanent character we can say: “He is very clever/interesting/boring.” “He is never sad/angry/jealous.” “He is always happy/cheerful/miserable.” 

✅ To describe a person’s current behaviour we can say:

“He is being difficult.”

“Now they are being dramatic.”

“At the moment she is being selfish.” 

Be careful though because this doesn’t work for all adjectives, for example you cannot say “She is being sad/happy”. This is because adjectives such as sad/happy can only be used when referring to someone’s character rather than a way to describe their current behaviour.

✅ There are also ways in which you can replace ‘being’ with another verb. ‘Being’ refers to the actions of the person. Therefore it can be replaced with a more specific verb, which highlights the person’s exact actions. Here are some examples: 

“She is acting crazy.”

“He is doing well.”

“They are working nicely together”
