Learn 20 Of The Most Common Phrasal Verbs With ’Get’

The following are some common phrasal verbs with the root verb get. They are listed as separable (always), separable (optional), inseparable (with object), or inseparable (no object). Remember to always conjugate the root verb get.

 

Below are the conjugations:

infinitive --.> get

present simple --> get and gets

-ing form --> getting

past simple --> got

past participle --> got (also gotten)


 

✅ get (something) across - separable (always) - to move something from one place to another.

Ex: I don’t know how I can get my snow tires across the country.

 

✅ get (something) across - separable (optional) - to successfully communicate.

Ex: No matter what I say, I’m just not getting my message across to you.

 

✅ get ahead of - inseparable (with object) - to exceed.

Ex: If I work all weekend I’ll be able to get ahead of schedule.

 

✅ get ahead - inseparable (no object) - to progress. Ex: You need a university degree these days if you want to get ahead in life.

 

✅ get along with - inseparable (no object) - to have a good relationship with someone.

Ex: All I’ve ever wanted is to get along with my siblings.

 

✅ get around - inseparable (with object) - to avoid a problem.

Ex: I’m not sure how, but we’ll find a way to get around these new problems.

 

✅ get around to - inseparable (with object) - to finally do something.

Ex: Soon I’ll get around to replacing my old cell phone.

 

✅ get around - inseparable (no object) - to become known.

Ex: The news of the approaching storm got around pretty quickly.


 

✅ get at - inseparable (no object) - to suggest something indirectly.

Ex: I’m not sure exactly what you’re getting at.

 

✅ get away - separable (optional) - to move away from someone or something.

Ex: Get away from that dessert! It’s for the party.

 

✅ get away - inseparable (no object) - to escape. Ex: Only one thief was caught, the rest got away

 

✅ get away - inseparable (no object) - to go on holiday.

Ex: Sometimes, I love to get away and head out of the city for a weekend.

 

✅ get away - inseparable (no object) - to leave somewhere.

Ex: I wish I could join you for lunch but I just can’t get away from work right now

 

✅ get away from - inseparable (no object) - to talk about something off-topic.

Ex: I think that we’re getting away from the main point here.

 

✅ get back - separable (optional) - to return something.

Ex: Trust me, you’ll never get your money back from her.

 

✅ get back - inseparable (no object) - to return.

Ex: Our flight lands at 9:00 so we should get back to the house around 10:00.

 

✅ get back - inseparable (no object) - to move away. Ex: Could you please get back? I need some space.

 

✅ get back into - inseparable (with object) - to start doing something again.

Ex: I am getting back into my regular fitness routine next week.

 

✅  get back into - inseparable (with object) - to find a new enthusiasm for something.

Ex: I thought the fourth season was kind of boring, but I’m getting back into it now.

 

✅ get by - inseparable (no object) - to have just enough money to live on.

Ex: I’m managing to get by these days.
