Basic Brazilian Portuguese Greetings
28 فبراير 2021 / البرتغالية / 2 قراءة دقيقة

Good afternoon = boa tarde (in Portuguese)

‘Boa tarde' is used to formally greet someone between lunch time and sunset. In Brazil, it is usually used along with some other greeting, for example when someone goes to the bakery to place an order:

☑ Oi, boa tarde! Me vê três pães por favor?

(Hi, good afternoon! Can I have three breads, please?)

Something you may not have known is that saying “me vê alguma coisa” is informal and common for native speakers ordering at the counter of a food store like a bakery or butcher.

Useful phrases in Portuguese:

Oi = Hi

Olá = Hello

Como está? (formal) = How are you?

Tudo bem? (informal) = How are you?

Bom dia! = Good morning!

Boa noite! = Good evening!

Boa noite! = Good night!

Tchau = Bye

Até amanhã! = See you tomorrow!

Note that we say 'boa noite' both to greet someone and to say goodbye to someone in the evening.
